The characteristic of graphite EDM electrodes is the ability to maintain cleanliness even at low speeds. EDM electrode materials need to possess high conductivity while also resisting corrosion from the EDM process on the machined metal.
- Dense structure, uniform composition without coarse particles or large pores.
- High mechanical strength and good machinability, capable of machining complex shapes, sharp angles, or thin sheets.
- We can rapidly produce electrodes of any required grade.
- Fast Speed
Graphite discharge speed surpasses that of copper electrodes, with the material less prone to deformation, particularly advantageous in the machining of thin rib electrodes. Graphite also has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion.
- Low Wear
Due to the presence of carbon atoms in the dielectric fluid, during discharge machining, high temperatures cause these carbon atoms to decompose, forming a protective film on the surface of the graphite electrode, compensating for its wear.
- Lightweight
Graphite density is only 1/5 of copper, effectively reducing the burden on EDM machines during discharge machining of large electrodes, making it more suitable for applications in large molds.
- Burr-Free
After machining with ordinary EDM electrodes, manual deburring is required, whereas graphite machining results in a burr-free finish, saving costs and labor significantly and facilitating automated production.
- Cost-Effective
Graphite products of the same volume are priced 30% to 60% lower than copper, with a stable price and relatively minor short-term fluctuations.
- Easy Polishing
Graphite’s low cutting resistance makes manual grinding and polishing easier during operations.
EDM Copper Electrodes

Single-Hole Copper EDM Electrode
- Single-hole copper EDM electrodes have a single channel designed specifically for effective debris removal and cooling while machining.
- They are known for their cost-effectiveness and durability, making them suitable choices for high-volume production and custom machining tasks.
- They are recommended for applications involving the process of burning holes through entire parts.

Multi-Hole Copper EDM Electrode
- Multi-hole copper EDM electrodes are engineered with multiple channels. These channels serve the purpose of burning off any residual material located at the bottom of the hole.
- This design enhancement facilitates better debris flushing and cooling. Consequently, it boosts cutting speed and reduces wear on the electrode.
- The electrodes feature a robust structure that ensures durability and maintains consistent performance over time.
- They are primarily utilized for material disintegration processes, where precision and reliability are critical.

Copper EDM Tapping Electrode
Copper EDM tapping electrodes are used to drill and tap in extremely hard materials in a single operation, with strict tolerance and high production rate requirements.
- Superior Surface Finish
- One significant advantage of using copper EDM electrodes is their ability to produce an excellent surface finish.
- Copper’s properties result in smoother cuts, minimizing the need for additional finishing processes.
- This improvement in the surface finish not only enhances the quality of the final product but also reduces overall production costs.
- Suitable for Various Applications
- Copper electrodes are versatile and can be used with a wide range of materials, including hard metals and alloys.
- Their adaptability makes copper electrodes suitable for industries ranging from aerospace to electronics.
- Copper is a durable material that strikes a balance between performance and longevity.
- They are practical for high-volume production and custom machining tasks.
- Excellent Precision and Efficiency
- Copper electrodes are renowned for their excellent conductivity and high melting point.
- These characteristics enable copper electrodes to achieve outstanding precision during machining operations, making them an ideal choice for intricate work.
- Copper electrodes’ efficiency allows for faster cutting speeds, reducing machining time and enhancing overall productivity.
Application of EDM Technology in Precision Mold Manufacturing
All kinds of tools and products used in our daily production and life, from the base of machine tools and the outer shells of machine bodies to small screws, buttons, and various household appliance casings, are closely related to molds. The shape of molds determines the appearance of these products, and the processing quality and accuracy of molds assess their quality. In modern industrial production, product parts are widely formed using methods such as stamping, forging, die-casting, extrusion, etc., matched with forming molds to shape blanks into parts that meet product requirements. These methods are suitable for applications where mold precision requirements are not strict.

When higher precision beyond these traditional machining methods is required, EDM machining is the preferred process. It does not use force to remove and shape materials but rather uses a wire discharge method to cut the workpiece material. The EDM process uses thermal energy to meet machining requirements. Its non-mechanical nature makes it an unconventional machining process.
EDM Electrode Ordering Guide
CNC machining is the best method for manufacturing EDM electrodes because it can create precise and complex details relatively quickly and at a lower cost. CNC machining is versatile and can produce complex geometric shapes and simple features like flats.
Additionally, when CNC-machined electrodes wear beyond their usable size, it’s easy to manufacture identical replacements.
- 1. Design:
First, you need to provide the design drawings (PDF/CAD drawings) or detailed specifications for the electrodes, ensuring that the part drawings and solid models are complete and correct with tolerances.
- 2. Ordering:
After the customer submits a quote request, we provide information such as pricing and delivery time according to the order requirements. The unit cost of electrode machining varies depending on the difficulty of machining the parts and the quantity.
- 3. Machining:
Once you agree on the price and place an order, we prepare for production, including designing fixtures as needed and programming CNC machines to meet your part requirements. The electrodes are then machined according to the drawings.
- 4. Surface Treatment:
CNC-machined EDM electrodes typically require surface treatment. Sandblasting or cleaning sharp corners may be necessary to ensure ease of handling the electrodes.
- 5. Inspection and Delivery:
We inspect CNC-machined electrodes and deliver them to customers after completing quality inspections. Customers receive the electrodes for acceptance to ensure they meet the requirements specified in the order.
- 6. After-Sales:
If needed, arrangements can be made for maintenance, after-sales service, or reprocessing.
EDM Electrode Material Considerations
- Wear Resistance (WR)
The electrode’s ability to resist erosion at corners and edges is directly related to its wear resistance and machinability. To minimize corner wear, electrode materials with high strength and high temperature resistance need to be selected.
- Surface Finish (SF)
Fine surface finish is achieved by combining appropriate electrode materials, good flushing conditions, and proper power settings. Ultra-fine particle high-strength graphite is the best choice for finishing electrodes.
- Machinability
In addition to being easy to machine, electrode materials must be sufficiently robust to resist damage during handling and the EDM process itself. Strength and small particle size are crucial to achieve minimum radii and tight tolerances.
- Material Cost
The cost of electrode materials typically accounts for only a small part of the total EDM cost but is often critical to electrode performance compared to other factors.
- Metal Removal Rate
The thermal and physical properties of electrode materials determine their ability to handle EDM energy and remove metal. Electrode materials must be sufficiently thermally conductive to absorb enough energy to create energy channels.
