What is Silicon Carbide Graphite Crucible? A silicon carbide crucible is a high-temperature refractory vessel made from graphite and silicon carbide materials, bonded with tar pitch or other synthetic resins, typically dark gray or black. Silicon carbide crucibles come in various shapes, with common ones including basin-shaped for lift-out furnaces, bowl or basin shapes for scoop-out furnaces, “TP” shapes for top-pouring furnaces, nozzle or spout shapes for tilting furnaces, and cylindrical shapes for induction furnaces. Silicon carbide graphite crucibles offer uniform temperature distribution during melting, high strength, and resistance to cracking, making them the preferred choice for casting high-quality metal products.
Why Add Silicon Carbide to Graphite Crucibles?
Optimal Thermal Conductivity
- Silicon carbide has a high melting point of about 3000°C, higher than most metals.
- It stays intact without cracking, even when cooled quickly from 1200°C to room temperature, allowing effective use in high-temperature environments.
- Adding silicon carbide to graphite crucibles improves thermal resistance.
- It boosts steel and iron smelting efficiency and saves energy.
Enhanced Chemical Stability
- Silicon carbide demonstrates strong stability against acids and alkalis, along with resistance to oxidation and other chemical reactions.
- It effectively lowers the oxidation rate of graphite crucibles when exposed to high temperatures.
- It enables crucibles to withstand corrosion from diverse molten metals and slag.
- This capability helps preserve the purity of the materials being smelted and extends the lifespan of the crucible.
Advantages of Silicon Carbide Graphite Crucibles
- High-Temperature Resistance
- Silicon carbide crucibles have a melting point of over 2000°C.
- Suitable for melting metals with temperatures below 1800°C.
- Ideal for various high-temperature smelting processes.
- Thermal Shock Resistance
- Crucibles often face thermal stress from uneven temperature changes during use, leading to potential premature damage.
- Resist thermal stress during high-temperature smelting.
- Ensure even heat distribution, preventing damage.
- Corrosion Resistance
- Flowing molten metal and injecting solid metals can cause wear and corrosion on the crucible’s inner walls.
- Silicon carbide graphite crucibles, with a higher silicon carbide content, offer better strength.
- Provide increased hardness and improved corrosion resistance.
- Longevity
- AGRM silicon carbide graphite crucibles undergo strict quality control during manufacturing.
- Ensure high product quality and durability in extremely high temperatures.
- Resist deformation and fracture, resulting in a longer lifespan.
- Cost-effectiveness
- Silicon carbide graphite crucibles are generally the most cost-effective option.
- Their durability and oxidation resistance reduce the frequency of replacements.
- Lowers overall operational costs.
- Low Metal Contamination
- Using SiC graphite crucibles in high-temperature melting leads to lower metal contamination compared to other crucibles.
- Excellent chemical stability of silicon carbide.
- It minimizes metal losses and maintains high purity of metal products.

How to Extend the Lifespan of Silicon Carbide Graphite Crucibles
- Pre-heat Before Use
Newly acquired crucibles should be slowly heated to 200°C and maintained for 2 hours before gradually reaching the target operating temperature. This process removes moisture and impurities, preventing stress damage from sudden high temperatures.
- Regular Inspection and Cleaning
Periodically inspect both the inside and outside surfaces of the crucible for cracks, defects, or severe oxidation. After each use, promptly remove residual melts and oxides. Use soft brushes or specialized cleaning tools to avoid scratching the crucible surface.
- Controlled Heating and Cooling Rates
Avoid rapid temperature changes during heating and cooling. Operate within a recommended rate of not exceeding 150°C per hour to prevent thermal stress damage to the crucible material and maintain structural integrity.
- Proper Storage Conditions
Store crucibles in dry, well-ventilated environments to prevent moisture absorption and exposure to corrosive gases. In storage, invert crucibles to prevent dust and debris from entering the interior, keeping them clean.
- Prevent Mechanical Damage
Handle crucibles with care during handling and loading to avoid collisions and drops that could cause mechanical damage. Use professional handling tools and methods, especially when crucibles are more fragile at high temperatures.
- Regular Annealing Treatment
After prolonged use, internal thermal stresses may develop within the crucible, affecting its structural stability. Periodic annealing treatment is recommended by slowly heating the crucible to 900°C, holding it for a specified time, then slowly cooling it to room temperature.
